Known as "The Hub City", Hattiesburg is located within 100 miles of the state capital of Jackson, the Gulf Coast, New Orleans, and Mobile. Due to the close proximity of New Orleans, USM does not hold classes over Mardi Gras, so students are able to attend the celebrations.
USM comprises the main campus located in Hattiesburg, and multiple permanent branch campuses: Gulf Park Campus in Long Beach, Mississippi, Stennis Space Center, Jackson County, Keesler Air Force Base, J.L. Scott Aquarium, Gulf Coast Research Lab, and Pontlevoy, France. The main campus has a range of facilities and buildings for students including residence halls, eateries, the Hub Plaza, Museum of Art, various gardens, the Cook Library and the MM Roberts Stadium. There is also a Barnes and Noble on campus, and also the biggest Starbucks cafe in the state.
Grad Student Organizations
Over 100 registered campus clubs and organizations, many specific to graduate students, provide students with numerous opportunities to participate in social, educational and cultural activities. Clubs include Arts and Letters, Business, Education and Psychology, Fraternities and Sororities, Games and Athletic, General Honors, Greek, Gulf Coast, Health, Religious, Science and Technology, and Service.
